‍In collaboration with the client and according to his direction and vision for StayAway, I was responsible for the initial evaluation of the California Courts website, the user flow, wireframes, and the clickable prototype.

Challenge

The information available to those seeking a restraining order is presented in a way that is confusing. If the person is seeking a restraining order, they must navigate through pages and pages of information on the website for the state they are seeking a restraining order in.

Process

Next, we parsed out the essential information the user would need to know, and developed a user process flow which included several different user flows, with the intention of providing a unique flow for the user depending on their specific situation.

Solution

We used this user flow to create wireframes, and we used the wireframes to create a clickable prototype which eneabled the client to test the proposed user flow.

Prototype

I created a clickable prototype using the wireframes I had made in Balsamiq.

The goal was to provide the user with the information they need to know for their specific case in an easy and straightforward way, and not to overload them with information that is not relevant to their situation.

Findings

  • Having the information laid out in the way it is could be very confusing to someone who may not be familiar with this process already (there are two sections for two “types” of restraining orders)
  • It’s a lot of information to take in at once and could be overwhelming
  • It may be a lot easier for the person looking at this to understand what they need to do for their specific situation if it was somehow possible to display only the information relevant to their situation

Next steps

The client has been presented with the prototype, and has said his next steps will be to test this low-fidelity prototype with users, make iterations as needed, and then move into development of the app and the initial rollout.

StayAway will be the initial product, and then the client plans on moving into expanding the app to provide assistance in getting legal aid to people in many types of situations.
